The pass standard for the FRCPath Part 2 Medical Microbiology exam is also set using the Angoff Method.

• The Angoff method is a criterion-referenced approach that uses a panel of examiners to set the pass mark.

• Examiners judge each component of the exam (written papers, OSPE, OSPE viva, etc.) based on the performance of a hypothetical minimally competent candidate.

• Standard setting is completed before (or sometimes just after) the exam is taken.

• The pass mark is not determined by candidate cohort performance, i.e. it does not depend on how other candidates perform.

• While the theoretical pass rate could range from 0–100%, in practice, approximately 60–70% of candidates are successful in the Part 2 examination.
